IMS – Integrated Management Systems

Integrated Management Systems

Where a company is committed to achieving certification to more than one standard, an Integrated Management System (IMS) is the simplest and most efficient solution. An IMS allows the requirements of multiple recognised standards to be met through a single unified management system, rather than maintaining multiple systems.

The main standards which are usually combined to form an IMS are:

  • ISO 9001 – Quality Management
  • ISO 14001 – Environmental Management
  • OHSAS 18001 – Occupational Health & Safety

An IMS can be formed from any two of the above standards and can also be integrated with the following standards:

  • PAS 2030 – Improving the Energy Efficiency of Existing Buildings
  • PAS 1192-2 – Specification for information management for the capital/delivery phase of construction projects using building information modelling (BIM Certification)
  • NHSS – National Highway Sector Schemes

The Benefits of an IMS can be summarised as Competitiveness, Costs and Reputation. The many benefits include:

  • Consistency of aims, objectives, systems and procedures
  • Time and cost reductions throughout the company
  • Reduction in audit time, fees, and frequency
  • Improved corporate image and reputation
  • Reduction in certification costs
  • Improvements in staff efficiency through the definition of clear roles and responsibilities
  • Increased operational efficiency
  • Reduction in risks
